Oil Spotlight: Ginger

Oil Spotlight: Ginger

Hot, spicy, earthy, and sweet, Ginger is the world’s most widely cultivated spice and people have been enjoying its many benefits for over 5,000 years. A relative of cardamom and turmeric, ginger is native to Asia, where it’s popularly used as a digestive tonic and a featured ingredient in curries, soups, and stir-fries*. Traditional Chinese health practices suggest ginger for its warming and stimulating aroma, while Ayurvedic practices focus on ginger’s internal digestive benefits.*

In ancient Greece, people ate thin slices of ginger wrapped in bread to aid digestion.* In Europe, this idea evolved into grating the ginger rhizome into the bread dough, and gingerbread was born. During the Middle Ages, gingerbread guilds controlled the production of this valuable sweet, which was enjoyed for its flavor as well as its ability to support healthy digestion.*

Sourced from Madagascar, doTERRA Ginger oil is pure, potent, and thoroughly tested to ensure safe aromatic, topical, and internal use.

Now for a little science... Ginger essential oil is made up of a chemical group called sesquiterpenes, which are commonly found in soothing essential oils like Ylang Ylang and Myrrh oil. Ginger oil includes sesquiterpenes called zingiberene and sesquiphellandrene, which contribute to digestive health when used internally* and promote the grounding and balance of emotions when used aromatically.*

Alpha zingiberene, the sesquiterpene that is the primary chemical constituent of ginger essential oil, is what gives ginger its distinct taste. The chemical makeup of Ginger oil contributes to its soothing properties for the body, including its ability to support healthy digestion and to reduce occasional nausea when taken internally,* or to create a soothing massage.
